Not all pre-workouts are equal. Learn what to look for in ingredients, dosages, and how to avoid the dreaded 'crash'.
A pre-workout supplement is a multi-ingredient formula designed to enhance energy, focus, endurance, and performance in the gym. The Indian fitness market has exploded with pre-workout options in recent years — but the quality varies enormously.
Understanding what's inside your pre-workout isn't just about performance. In India, where regulatory oversight of supplements is less strict than in the US or EU, knowing your ingredients is also a matter of safety.
1. Caffeine (150–300mg) The cornerstone of any effective pre-workout. Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors in the brain, reducing fatigue perception and increasing alertness. Clinically effective dose: 3–6mg per kg of body weight. For a 70kg person, that's 210–420mg.
Look for: Natural caffeine or caffeine anhydrous. Be wary of "caffeine blend" labels that obscure actual amounts.
2. Beta-Alanine (3.2–6.4g) Increases muscle carnosine levels, buffering lactic acid and delaying the "burn" during high-rep sets. Causes harmless "tingling" (paresthesia) on the skin — this is normal and not dangerous.
Clinical dose: 3.2g per session. Anything less is under-dosed.
3. L-Citrulline (6–8g) or Citrulline Malate (8g) Boosts nitric oxide production, enhancing blood flow and the classic "pump" feeling. Also reduces exercise-induced fatigue and improves recovery between sets.
Important: Many Indian pre-workouts use "Arginine" instead, which has poor bioavailability compared to L-Citrulline. If you see arginine AKG at 2–3g, the product is underdosed.
4. Creatine Monohydrate (3–5g) When included in a pre-workout, creatine contributes to ATP replenishment. However, creatine requires consistent daily dosing to saturate muscle stores — so a pre-workout with creatine only on training days may not be optimal. Consider supplementing separately.
5. BCAAs (5–10g) Branched-chain amino acids (leucine, isoleucine, valine) help prevent muscle catabolism during training and support muscle protein synthesis post-session.
6. Electrolytes Sodium, potassium, and magnesium are lost through sweat. Many pre-workouts neglect this, but electrolytes are especially important in India's hot climate where athletes sweat heavily.
Proprietary Blends (Prop Blends) If a label says "Performance Matrix: 4500mg" without listing individual ingredient amounts, that's a proprietary blend. The problem: the manufacturer can include a tiny amount of the effective ingredient and fill the rest with cheap fillers. Avoid products that hide individual ingredient doses.
DMAA, DMHA, and Other Stimulants Some aggressive pre-workouts use research chemicals like DMAA (1,3-dimethylamylamine) that are banned in many countries and linked to cardiovascular events. WADA and FSSAI regulations prohibit these compounds.
Artificial Dyes and Excessive Sweeteners Colour 133 (Brilliant Blue), Yellow 5, and others have raised health concerns. Look for pre-workouts using natural colorants or none at all.
Extreme Doses of Caffeine (>400mg) More isn't better. Caffeine above 400mg can cause anxiety, heart palpitations, and digestive distress, especially on an empty stomach. New users should start with half a serving.
The post-workout "crash" is usually caused by: 1. Too much caffeine with rapid metabolism (genetic) 2. Blood sugar spikes from high-sugar formulas 3. Dehydration
To minimize crashes: stay hydrated, consume complex carbs before training, and consider L-theanine (200mg) alongside caffeine — it smooths out the stimulant effects without blunting energy.
Yes — if you train in the evening or are sensitive to caffeine. Stimulant-free formulas focus on pump (citrulline, agmatine), endurance (beta-alanine), and focus (tyrosine, alpha-GPC) without the CNS stimulation.
Our pre-workout formulas are fully transparent — no proprietary blends. Every ingredient and its exact dose is listed on the label. Tested for heavy metals and banned substances, manufactured in ISO-certified facilities, and FSSAI registered.
Whether you're a beginner looking for a gentle energy lift or an experienced athlete wanting clinical-level doses of citrulline and beta-alanine, we have options designed for the Indian athlete's needs and climate.
